COEUR d'ALENE - A father who in July allegedly critically injured his 20-day-old son pleaded not guilty on Monday in 1st District Court in Kootenai County.

James D. Blanchard, 20, is charged with felony injury to a child, stemming from the incident involving his son, Noah.

If he were found guilty, he is facing up to possibly 30 years in prison because of an enhancement for "infliction of great bodily injury," said District Judge John Luster.

Blanchard, his son, and the mother, Angelina Ray, lived at an apartment at 1042 N. 17th St. That's where the injuries reportedly took place.

Prosecutors have said Blanchard allegedly did not call 911 when Noah was injured, but instead called Ray, who was not home. She dialed 911 when she arrived there.

Deputy Prosecutor David Robins said in court right after Blanchard's arrest that witnesses would be able to describe Blanchard at different times allegedly either shaking the baby, forcing him to eat, screaming at him, tossing him across a room, and even slamming him down into a crib.

Blanchard's mother said this summer that Noah was born a week premature. A trial date was not set by Luster.
