WENATCHEE - The Moses Lake cross country had a strong showing at the CBBN 4A district championships at Walla Walla Point Park in Wenatchee Thursday.
The boys team anchored by Hayden Wise placed fifth in the championship race, beating Chiawana and Richland, but fell short of Davis by eight points.
"It was a good battle between our two schools and an exciting race to watch," coach Loren Childers said. "Our two through seven runners were just seconds behind a Davis runner. Had it been the other way around, we would have finished fourth. I am really looking forward to a rematch next week as we both advance to the regional championships held in Spokane."
Childers said Wise was the runner who really stood out for the Chiefs.
"He was the highlight of the night for us, placing seventh overall with a very fast 15:58 finishing time," he said. "This accomplishment earns him First Team All Conference honors. His time was 39 seconds faster than he ran here last year, and is the fastest 3-mile time ever run by a Chief since Jen Carpenter or I have been coaching."
The girls team placed well at districts also, finishing in sixth place.
"Like the boys, this was also their final standing during the regular season and we were racing without several of the varsity girls," Childers said. "Julia Sheremet led the way with a league honorable mention placing 15th with a time of 19:56. Fellow junior, Hannah Marsh finished 24 seconds behind her, Gloria Saucedo ran a 3-mile personal best of 21:18, and Dani Crawford, beat her personal time on this course by 42 seconds."
Both teams advance to the Regional Championships in Spokane at the Wandermere Golf Course next week where the Columbia Basin and the GSL will compete for state births. The top three teams and top 15 individuals advance .
