Holiday Village volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for a Holiday Village work party at Marantette Park on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 10 a.m. Some muscle and power drills will be needed to erect the Holiday Village display. Volunteers are asked to contact Gary Sparr at gsparr@glacierbank.com or 751-4752.

Head Start open house

The Canyon Center of Northwest Montana Head Start will hold an open house on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. to celebrate their 10th year. All alumni, community members and past donors are invited to visit the school at 755 South Fork Road, in Martin City. Appetizers will be served, and visitors will be asked to contribute a hand print to their new mural. The school recently received a Head Start Body Start grant to enhance their outdoor play space. The school shares a community garden with the Flathead Food Bank's Martin City pantry. For more information, call 387-5753.

Free dinners

The Columbia Falls Community Kitchen will serve free meals in the basement of St. Richard's Catholic Church on Friday, Oct. 28, through Sunday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. Dinner will not be served on Halloween, Oct. 31.

Library meeting

The Flathead County Library System Board of Trustees will hold their regular meeting at Glacier Discovery Square on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 9 a.m. For more information, call Kim Crowley at 758-5826.

Fall Chamber decorations

For the 18th year, businesses will decorate Columbia Falls with cornstalks, straw bales and scarecrows. The Northwest Antique Power Association will donate straw bales from their recent antique engine tractor show. Bales will be limited this year, and businesses are asked to take one or two for their display. The bales will be located on a trailer at Fourth Street Furniture Store, 28 Fourth Street West. Judging will take place the first week in November. Winners will we announced at the Columbia Falls Chamber of Commerce's general membership meeting on Nov. 8.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
