Investigators withhold police shooting details

MOSES LAKE - Investigators have so far released few details regarding Monday's fatal shooting involving a Royal City police officer.
"We understand the media's and public's interest and need for information about this serious incident, but we want all the information we release to be accurate," Kyle Foreman with Grant County Emergency Management stated Tuesday.
"That accuracy comes through the investigators' thorough work. Because of this, the information for public release may not rapid, but what we do release will be accurate."
Foreman is serving as the spokesman for the Columbia Basin Investigative Team, which is heading up the shooting investigation.
What is known so far is that at around 5:15 p.m. a Royal City police officer shot and killed a male suspect at a trailer park on Hemlock Avenue Northwest in Royal City.
The victim was reportedly dead on scene when EMS arrived.
An autopsy was scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison, who said the victim's name was being withheld until next of kin were notified.
Citizens who witnessed the shooting were being interviewed by detectives in Royal City throughout Tuesday, Foreman said.
The identity of the police officer, who was not injured, is reportedly being withheld to "maintain the integrity of the investigation."
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol after such an incident.
The Royal City Police Department has two police officers, according to the city website. Korey Jodkins has been employed with the city since Nov. 2008 and Rey Rodriguez was hired in June 2009.
Chief Darin Smith has been part of the Royal City Police Department since 1989 and was appointed chief in 1999.
"It is very early in the investigation, and there will likely be no further information released for at least the next 48 hours," Foreman stated Monday. "We will provide further information when we can release it."
At the height of the incident there were as many as 30 law enforcement personnel from 10 agencies at the scene, Foreman said, including Grant County Sheriff's deputies, Moses Lake police, Mattawa police, Washington State Patrol troopers and state Fish and Wildlife officers.
