Robert (Bob) Daniel Donovan Sr., 86, of Garwood, was received into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father on Oct. 13, 2011, at Kootenai Medical Center. He was born in Boston, Mass., on April 8, 1925, to Daniel Ambrose Donovan and Virginia Mae (Baumbach) Donovan.

Bob enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard unit 84 in 1942. He served during World War II in the Gilbert Islands in a loran station on Betio Island. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.

He married Bette Lou (Buthman) Donovan on Feb. 23, 1949, in Oakland, Calif. Together they owned Donovan Stained Glass Studio Inc. in Burbank, Calif. They did stained glass windows worldwide, but are most known for "The Tree of Life" in the Stauffer Chapel at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. After moving their studio to Hayden in 1975 they retired in 1982. They opened All Seasons Outfitters/Camo Discount Warehouse from 1983-1995.

Bob and Bette were honored by Pepperdine University in 2003 for making Stauffer Chapel one of the most recognizable landmarks on the California coastline.

A loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed flea markets, fishing, teaching stained glass classes, card games, billiards and making centipede shaped pancakes for his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Bette; his mother and father; two brothers Henry and Leroy Donovan; and two sisters Roma (Donovan) Ballard and Doris Donovan.

He is survived by his children, Deatra (Donovan) Yatman of Beverly Hills, Calif., Robert Lee Donovan Jr. of Garwood and Carol (Donovan) Kelly of Garwood; his grandchildren, Ryan Yatman of Los Angeles, Calif., Robin and Wendi Donovan of Kennewick, Wash., Sara (Kelly) and husband Robert Bennett of Post Falls, and Rachel (Kelly) and husband Brad Davis of Rathdrum.
