MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake City Council candidates offered several opinions on sharing campaign financing information in the Nov. 8 election.

Candidates running for election do not have to file a list of their contributions if they raise $5,000 or less or are campaigning for local office in a community of fewer than 5,000 residents, explained Laurie Anderson, with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission.

"They don't have to report anything to us," she said.

Jason Avila, who is running for position 3, was the only Moses Lake council candidate who chose to file with the Public Disclosure Commission, despite having fewer than $5,000 in donations.

The PDC website reveals from June through mid-October Avila raised $2,150 in cash contributions and in-kind contributions of $228. He has so far spent $1,828 of the donations, which came from 15 private residents of Moses Lake and range from $20 to $520.

Avila's opponent for position 3, Darrin Jackson, said he's raised $1,160 from six private individuals and has so far spent $1,132 on radio advertising, signs and fuel for the Model T campaign vehicle he's been driving for the past several months.

Jackson, who is on his third run for local elected office, said he donated to his own campaign and saved some money by reusing several signs he had from last time.

Position 6 incumbent Dick Deane reused signs and, according to his list of contributions and expenses, spent under $20 over the course of this campaign. He reportedly accepted no campaign contributions.

James Liebrecht, who is campaigning for Dean's seat, said he made a decision not to accept contributions when first running for elected office years ago, believing it presents a potential conflict of interest. Liebrecht said so far he's spent about $1,000 of his own money on signs and radio announcements.

Incumbent position 7 councilman Jon Lane declined to share his list of campaign donors or expenditures at this time.

"I'd rather not," Lane said. "Maybe after the election."

His challenger, Todd Voth, also declined to reveal his funding specifics, although he did say private individuals have been donating to the campaign.

"I've raised some and some has come out of my own pocket," he said. "I can tell you it's under $5,000."
