Glacier boys knock off Sentinel in loser-out match at state soccer

HELENA - The Glacier boys soccer team brushed off an opening day loss at the Class AA state tournament with a 4-1 win over Missoula Sentinel in a loser-out game Friday.
It was the first win at the state tournament in the five-year history of Glacier High School.
The Wolfpack is one of only two schools to have reached the playoffs in each of the past three years.
The victory was even more meaningful in that it gave No. 4 seed Glacier (5-6-4) its first win over Sentinel (6-3-5) this season. They had tied the Spartans at home and lost to them in Missoula during conference play.
The Wolfpack will play Billings West today at 10 a.m. to determine the fifth-place finisher in Class AA. They were sent to the consolation bracket after a 2-1 loss to No. 1 seed Bozeman Thursday.
"The guys came out and responded really well," Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke said. "I didn't know what to expect after a tough loss to Bozeman."
Matt Peters struck first for Glacier in the 27th minute, depositing a pass from Jake Lockwood into the back of Sentinel's net.
Sentinel tied the game with a successful penalty kick by Quinn Andrews in the 48th minute, but that score would be the end of production for the Spartan offense.
Josiah Bumgarner scored on a rare throw-in from about 40 yards out in the 58th minute. The ball clipped the hand of Sentinel goalkeeper Josh Pannell and sailed into the net.
Tanner Maroney scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute then provided an assist for Peters' second goal of the game ten minutes later.
"(Maroney) subbed in to the center-midfield role and he played that really well," O'Rourke said. "A lot of guys played great today."
O'Rourke noted that the forecast for today's game was calling for gusty winds and possible heavy rain. He said he expects Billings West to provide a big challenge for the Wolfpack.
"They're a solid team," he said. "It will be a good game."
