MOSCOW - Almost. Again.

The storyline has been a repetitive and painful one for the Idaho Vandals who, once again, had their hearts broken in the waning moments.

This time it was by Hawaii, which eked out a 16-14 victory over the Vandals in Western Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon before 10,461 at the Kibbie Dome.

Kenton Chun's 35-yard field goal with 32 seconds left put Hawaii (5-3, 3-1 WAC) ahead by two points. Idaho (1-7, 0-4) drove to the Warriors' 36 but on the final play of the game, Trey Farquhar's 53-yard field goal attempt was long enough, but wide left.

"Painful. It's painful right now," Idaho coach Robb Akey said. "We had every opportunity to finish this one. Offense had a chance to finish it. Defense had a chance to finish it. Special teams had a chance to finish it."

Princeton McCarty ran for 99 yards on 28 carries for Idaho. He fumbled at the goal line but Matt Cleveland recovered in the end zone for the game's first score less than four minutes into the game. Idaho's other touchdown came on Tracy Carter's 70-yard interception return in the third quarter, giving the Vandals a 14-13 lead that they held until the final minute.

Bryant Moniz was 32 of 53 for 338 yards for the Warriors, including a 2-yard TD pass to Billy Ray Stutzmann in the second quarter. Hawaii's Royce Pollard caught 10 passes for 151 yards.

Idaho had two chances to add to its one-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Vandals had fourth-and-1 at the Hawaii 15, but McCarty was stopped for no gain and Hawaii took over.

Taylor Davis started at quarterback for the first time for Idaho. The 6-foot-3 sophomore was 6 of 17 for 33 yards with one interception and was replaced by Brian Reader in the fourth quarter. But Reader threw an interception inside the Hawaii 10-yard line, leading to the winning field goal for the Warriors. Reader finished 5 of 7 for 52 yards.

Joey Iosefa was the leading rusher for Hawaii with 26 yards. Moniz, who was sacked six times, finished with minus-28 yards rushing. Hawaii totaled 15 yards rushing.

The loss officially ended any bowl hopes of the Vandals, who have four games left. Idaho has lost six straight, and three of the last four setbacks have been by seven points or less.

"I think we're capable of it," Akey said of notching a win. "We just have to finish it. It kills to be sitting here with only one win. When they've come as close as they have. There's nobody that wants to have that success more than these guys do. It's our names that are on the label."

Benson Mayowa had three sacks for Idaho. Conrad Scheidt added two more (as well as a tackle of loss) and Charles Smith had one (it led to the fumble that set up Cleveland's first-quarter score). Korey Toomer and Homer Mauga each had two tackles for loss, while Quin Ashley had the interception and Andre Ferguson added a recovery of a UH fumble to Carter's.
