COEUR d'ALENE - Johnny Haskew missed the third quarter and part of the fourth because his legs were cramping up.

But the Post Falls senior, a two-way starter, made it back on the field for what turned out to be his team's biggest play of the game.

Playing free safety, Haskew ranged far to his right, to the corner of the end zone, for a leaping interception that helped secure the Trojans' 17-7 nonleague victory at Lake City on Friday night.

"I saw their two receivers to the right side, and their go-to receiver, No. 5 (Kaleb Mitchell), to the left," Haskew said. "So I just kinda cheated over that way, and kinda knew it was coming. I just saw the quarterback look over there and I was gone."

The game didn't count in the 5A Inland Empire League standings - the teams play again Sept. 30 at Post Falls in the league matchup - but "it still means a lot," Haskew said. "Our team's been working really hard, and we've wanted this for a couple of years now, and finally we got it."

It was Post Falls’ first victory over Lake City since 2004, and the Trojans’ first win at Lake City since 1996.

“It means a lot to our kids,” said Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz, who pulled out a few tricks for the first meeting — including an onside kick, a halfback pass and a fake punt. “We just wanted to control the ball and control the clock. Our defense — holy smokes! — shutting them out in the first half. All three facets played well tonight.”

Post Falls (2-0) controlled the game on the ground, getting off 50 rushing plays for 230 yards. Tyson Johnson rushed for 187 yards on 36 carries, including a 20-yard touchdown run with 4:56 left in the third that hiked the Trojans’ lead to 17-0.

Timmy Mueller’s line drive 36-yard field goal — which cleared the upright by perhaps a foot or two — with 3:27 left in the first quarter stood up as the only points of the first half. It was a half in which Post Falls outgained Lake City (1-1) 146-54 in total yards (for the game, it was 326-197 PF).

On the first drive of the third quarter, Trojan quarterback Joey Pfennigs threw to his left to Haskew, who knifed in to complete a 12-yard scoring play for a 10-0 lead. Tim Beggs’ fumble recovery led to Johnson’s score on the next drive.

Lake City then put together an 80-yard, 15-play drive capped by Levi Hewitt’s 2-yard run around left end on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Lake City then stopped Post Falls on downs, and drove to the Trojans’ 7. On second and goal, quarterback Bobby Traverse lofted a ball up for Mitchell in the end zone, but Haskew raced over and, with Mitchell and a Post Falls defensive back battling for position, Haskew leaped above them, caught the ball and came crashing down to the turf just inside the sideline.

“Haskew’s a player,” Hinz said. “He made a great catch, some saving tackles, the interception ... Johnny’s a very good high school football player.”

“We didn’t have a great week of practice,” Lake City coach Van Troxel said. “I’m a 100-percent believer you play the way you practice. So maybe it was a good lesson. But on the other hand, you’ve got to give Post Falls all the credit. They were very well prepared. They played extremely hard, Johnson did a great job of running the ball, Jeff did everything he needed to get his guys ready to go.”

Next Friday, Post Falls travels to Rexburg to play Madison, and Lake City plays at Lewiston in a nonleague game between 5A IEL teams.
