MEN'S SOCCER

COEUR d'ALENE - Eliseo Santana had two assists as the North Idaho men's soccer team beat Treasure Valley 2-1 at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday at Eisenwinter Field.

"It was a real competitive match," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "We had some early season problems and it took us a while to combine on the field and were shuffling things around. Defensively we'd play well and then we weren't getting back and once we took the lead again we started to see that hole again."

Laramie and Chemeketa tied 3-3 in the other men's game on Saturday.

NIC (1-0) hosts Chemeketa today at 5:30 p.m.

First half - 1, NIC, Ryan Krempels (Eliseo Santana), 10:00. 2, TV, Aldo Flores (unassisted), 40:00. Second half - 3, NIC, Chad Ward (Santana), 43:00.

Shots on goal - TV 3, NIC 5.

Saves - TV, Travis Stice 3; NIC, Dana Ashton 5.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

North Idaho 3

Treasure Valley 0

COEUR d'ALENE - Anna Valentine and Aubree Mercier scored a minute apart in the second half as the Cardinals opened their season by beating the Chukars in the Cardinal Classic at Eisenwinter Field.

"I thought we played pretty well, especially in the first half," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "We've been working on possessing the ball and moving off the ball and scored early because of it. In the second half, the girls got a little anxious and started pushing the ball more and our play wasn't as good."

Demi Wignot opened the scoring in the first half for NIC (1-0), who host Chemeketa today at 3 p.m.

Salt Lake beat Chemeketa 5-0 in the other women's match earlier Saturday.

First half - 1, NIC, Demi Wignot (Carissa Christensen), 5:00. Second half - 2, NIC, Anna Valentine (Tia Sharp), 42:00. 3, NIC, Aubree Mercier (unassisted), 43:00.

Shots on goal - TV 4, NIC 10.

Saves - TV, Meghan Schram 4; NIC, Hannah Slinkard 1, Allysa Powell 2.

VOLLEYBALL

NIC finishes 2-2 at Salt Lake tourney

SALT LAKE CITY - The 17th-ranked North Idaho College women's volleyball team split in matches at the Marriott Residence Inn Tournament on Saturday, beating Northwest College of Powell, Wyo., 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 before falling to 13th-ranked Northeastern Junior College of Sterling, Colo., 25-17, 29-27, 24-26, 25-18 on the campus of Salt Lake Community College.

Against Northwest, Sierra Pancho had 34 assists and two blocks, Emily Sarff had 11 digs and eight kills, Yang Yang had 11 kills and Janele Vogt seven kills for NIC.

"I think we made some improvements from last week (at the CSI tournament)," NIC coach Kandice Kelly said. "We lost to Northwest in five last week, so it was good to beat them in three this time."

Against Northeastern JC, Smith had 18 digs, 10 kills and three blocks, Yang 15 kills and two blocks, and Pancho 31 assists for NIC (3-5), which travels to the Community Colleges of Spokane tournament on Friday and Saturday.

"We made a lot of unforced errors today," Kelly said. "Northeastern was a scrappy team and dug up almost everything we set back to them. It's starting to slowly come together for us."
