Vikings win easily at The Clink

SEATTLE - The Coeur d'Alene Vikings racked up 32 points. The starting defense yielded only eight.
The Vikings improved to 2-0, both wins coming after games that required long road trips.
Not bad, huh coach?
"We're not very happy with how we won the game, but we'll take it," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said Saturday night after his Vikings, ranked No. 1 in Idaho in 5A by state media, beat the Moses Lake Chiefs 32-14 at the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at CenturyLink Field.
"It was a good experience for the kids. You don't get that many opportunities to do things like this, but I don't think we played to our standard at all."
Playing in the home of the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings controlled the game, but were hampered by a steady stream of penalties. The Vikings were flagged 12 times for 118 yards.
The penalties stalled several drives. Four times, the Vikings faced third down and more than 30.
"We have a fast-break offense," tackle Matt Howard said. "When we get penalties, it hurts us pretty bad."
The numbers the Vikings put up on offense don’t indicate a struggle. Quarterback Chad Chalich passed for 200 yards and a touchdown. He was 14 of 21 with an interception. He rushed for a game-high 72 yards and three more scores.
“I think Chad would tell you it wasn’t one of his better games,” Amos said.
Chalich, listening in the background, nodded in agreement.
The defense was respectable too. Other than a scoring drive in the first quarter, it stymied the offense of the Chiefs (0-1). Moses Lake, which lost at Coeur d’Alene 31-0 last year in a game called in the third quarter because of weather, scored its second touchdown late in the fourth against the reserves.
Moses Lake quarterback Justin Simmons passed for 176 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for a second score. He also lost three fumbles.
Playing six hours from home in a different stadium made for a unique experience.
“I think the travel kind of got to some people, too,” Howard said. “It was a little different on the bus. People were goofing around.”
About 100 fans sat in the Coeur d’Alene side of the field. The stadium dubbed The Clink seats 67,000.
“It’s just a great experience for us to play in an NFL stadium,” Chalich said. “We didn’t play bad because of the atmosphere. We just have to focus up next time and come out with more intensity.”
The Vikings return home next week to play Skyview of Vancouver, Wash.
“They’re the team that beat us last year,” Howard said. “We’re really fired up this year.”
