Valentine leads women

COEUR d'ALENE - Anna Valentine scored a hat trick before halftime as the North Idaho College women's soccer team routed Chemeketa Community College of Salem, Ore., 8-1 on Sunday to finish 2-0 at the season-opening Cardinal Classic at Eisenwinter Field.

Carissa Christensen had a goal and two assists for NIC, and Tia Sharp had three assists.

"Alaina Webb and Rachel Crawford had good games as well," Cardinal coach Dan Hogan said. "Both were instrumental in stopping several Chemeketa attacks and starting the Cardinal offense."

Salt Lake defeated Treasure Valley 3-0 in the other game.

NIC's women's and men's teams both play Northwest College on Friday and Bismarck State on Saturday, both in Powell, Wyo.

COEUR d'ALENE - Kiefer Lee's pass to Chad Ward was accidentally deflected into the net by a defender attempting to clear the ball from 22 yards out, giving NIC the tying goal in the 77th minute of their Cardinal Classic game at Eisenwinter Field.

"It was the longest own goal I've ever seen," Cardinal coach Ken Thompson said. "We could have been more composed with the ball throughout the game. Dana Ashton was the guy who kept us in the game ... he was an absolute rock in goal."

Laramie County beat Treasure Valley 4-1 in the other men's game.
