POST FALLS - On any given night, anybody is capable of good things in the 5A Inland Empire League.

On Tuesday night, it was the visiting Lake City Timberwolves that got the first big shot in as they swept the defending league and Region 1 champion Post Falls Trojans 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 in the 5A IEL opener for both schools at The Arena.

Kylie Curtis had 20 kills and seven assists for the Timberwolves (2-1).

After Lake City took the first two games in 42 minutes, the teams played a 45-minute third game in which the Timberwolves scored the final six points to close out the match.

"We'd build some momentum, then have it taken away from us," Lake City coach Bret Taylor said. "I was fearing we'd lose it. But the girls came out and fired off some points and got it going."

Curtis provided two late kills in the third game to get the win.

“Kylie brings a lot of positive things to our team,” Taylor said. “We’re excited to have her join us. She’s going to be a major contributor this year and a good teammate to have on the floor.”

Curtis transferred from Coeur d’Alene High during the summer.

“Bret has been pushing us hard in the offseason for this moment,” Curtis said. “When the game got close, we really kicked it in. It felt really good to have the match end the way we wanted it to.”

Camille Rounds finished with 15 assists and five aces, Jennifer Schuman had eight digs, Mackenzie Brown eight digs and Kelly Jo Cutler two blocks for Lake City, which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

“I think with any team in this league, you’re going to have to bring it every night,” Taylor said. “There’s no clear-cut leader, and we’re all going to have fight. It makes our league that much better. Anyone can compete on any given night. Post Falls is a great team and may have not had their best night. Our kids played their hearts out tonight. It was a good win for us. It has been a while since we’ve won in this gym.”

Sierra Monti had 10 kills and three blocks off the bench for Post Falls (2-1), which had 12 unforced errors in the second game.

“You’re not going to win many games with those kind of numbers,” Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. “Lake City played really well tonight.”

Tori Bertsch had 16 assists and three blocks and Allison Meehan had 10 kills for Post Falls, which travels to Lewiston on Thursday.

“I think we’ve got to respect everyone in this league,” Hanna said. “You’ve got to be prepared for each match. I don’t think we expected to just walk through the league — but it was nice to have a loss early so we know what to work on.”
