GIRLS SOCCER
SANDPOINT - For the first 75 minutes of the game it was all Sandpoint, as the Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead over Lakeland in a 4A Inland Empire League girls soccer clash Tuesday at War Memorial Field.
Then Lakeland junior Jordan Ward struck twice in the final five minutes, helping the Hawks (1-3-1, 0-1-1 4A IEL) earn a 2-2 tie in each team's second league contest. Not surprisingly, Lakeland head coach Mario Maddy was happier with the tie than his counterpart, Julie Pitre.
"I think we finally played a hard-nosed game and it paid off in the way we created," said Maddy, adding his team is still building. "It's tough to play up in Sandpoint."
Ellie Engel scored her third goal in the past two games to give Sandpoint (1-2-4, 0-0-2) an early 1-0 lead, then Meghan Pagano added what looked to be the insurance goal in the 58th minute.
Pitre was unhappy that her team wasn't able to secure the win, and now has two ties in league play.
"I'm disappointed in our overall intensity of play," Pitre said. "If we're going to win games, we need to start playing with a sense of urgency and clean it up."

SANDPOINT - Sophomore Jeremiah Gagnon scored an equalizing goal early in the first half, but it was an assist late in the game that proved the difference as the Bulldogs defeated the Hawks in a 4A Inland Empire League match at War Memorial Field.
Tied 1-1 late in the game, Gagnon broke free in the box, passing up a good shot to get a crashing teammate a better one, and Aaron Crossingham blasted home the game winner in the 76th minute for the Bulldogs (4-2-1, 1-0 4A IEL).
Alex Opland got the Hawks (2-2-2, 0-2) on the board first off an assist from Colton Grytness in the ninth minute, and Lakeland coach Nick Haynes was happy with his team's overall performance, despite the tough loss.
"Malte Noergaard played really well in the back and Colton and Alex have been really consistent for us," Haynes said. "We played hard; hopefully next time we get them."
