Raptor day
Flathead Audubon will host its fifth annual Raptor Day at Lone Pine State Park, in Kalispell, on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be educational booths, talks by raptor experts, live birds, children's activities, food vendors and commemorative events honoring conservationist Rod Ash. The National Bison Range, in Moiese, has switched to its fall hours. The visitor center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The scenic drives will be open from 7 a.m. to dark. Visitors will need to begin the Red Sleep Mountain Drive by 6 p.m. in order to finish driving the 19-mile long, one-way gravel road before the gate closes. For more information, call 406-644-2211.
Horsemen meet
The Back Country Horsemen of the Flathead will meet in the Fish, Wildlife and Parks offices in Kalispell on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. The volunteer organization is dedicated to protecting stockowners' use of wilderness and backcountry trails, education of horse owners on Leave-No-Trace principles and support to backcountry agencies. Ultramarathon
The 30th Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon will be held along Hungry Horse Reservoir on Saturday, Oct. 8. Sponsored by the Cheetah Herders Athletic Club, the footrace is managed primarily to get first-time ultradistance runners to the finish line. Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
