Local events are planned for Sunday for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Here's what's happening:
• A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Post Falls American Legion, 1138 E. Poleline Ave.
Representatives from the fire and police departments and city will be among the speakers.
"Last year we had about 800 people attend," said Legion Commander John Dunlap, who recently returned to the post on a limited basis after having stomach surgery.
Starting at 2 p.m., music will be provided by the Kelly Hughes Band. There will be concessions for sale.
The American Legion Riders will have a memorial ride from Post Falls to Newport from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
For more information on the legion events, call 773-9054.
• A tributary ceremony will be held at the Fallen Heroes Plaza in Cherry Hill Park in Coeur d'Alene from 1-2 p.m.
The ceremony is hosted by the city's fire and police departments and military services. It will feature Mayor Sandi Bloem, Fire Chief Kenny Gabriel and Police Chief Wayne Longo.
Honor Guard and military fly-by will be part of the tribute.
An open house in the nearby fire department station will follow the ceremony from 2-5 p.m.
The park is at 1500 N. 15th St.
• Kootenai County Fire and Rescue will dedicate its new training facility next to its administration building, 5271 E. Seltice Way, at 3:30 p.m. There will be tours and refreshments from 4-5 p.m.
The event will pay tribute to those who lost their lives 10 years ago. It will also celebrate the facility, which will help firefighters become proficient in their duties.
The project has been in the making since 1997.
The 10-acre campus includes a five-story, 6,600-square-foot training tower, confined space prop and railcar prop.
Future plans include a burn building, extrication area, structural collapse area, car fire prop, propane truck fire prop, helicopter landing zone to accommodate a military Black Hawk helicopter, a 300-seat classroom, a pavilion-style classroom and training administration, maintenance and storage buildings.
The training tower allows crews to perform search and rescue, pitched and gable roof ventilation, rope rescue training, fire hose manipulation, standpipe operations, basement and initial fire attack scenarios and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) confidence drills. There is a smoke system plumbed throughout the tower. It also has the option to change interior wall plans.
The training campus was developed with input from other local agencies.
Interagency agreements will be made to allow other agencies to utilize the grounds.
