Farragut to host 25th reunion
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 3 months AGO
Farragut Naval Training Station will hold its 25th reunion on Saturday.
The opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in the memorial plaza adjoining the museum at the brig at Farragut State Park.
The reunion will be held this year as it has since the 1980s. The day will start at the plaza in front of the Museum at the Brig at 9. Following these ceremonies the museum, showcasing the story of the Training Station, will be open featuring new displays added this year.
During the day there will be opportunity for the returning veterans, their families, and members of the community to socialize, and at 3 p.m. there will be a barbecue at the Sunrise Shelters, which will include dancing at the Sunrise area.
"Farragut State Park continues to preserve and educate on the importance of the Farragut Naval Training Station not only on this one special day in September, but throughout the year," said Randall Butt, park manager.
Farragut coordinator Janice Lauer said she and others work hard all year to put on a celebration honoring all those who served their country during World War II and who did their Boot Camp at Farragut.
About 35 veterans attended last year, and about that many are expected this year. Some come from across the country, Lauer said.
Last year they included all War World II Navy veterans as well, and this year have invited all military members who were in service during that time to join the reunion.
Lauer said the opening flag-raising ceremony is emotional.
"It will bring tears to your eyes, I can assure you," she said.
Medicare program to be presented Wednesday
An hourlong program, "Staying Healthy with Medicare," is 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library. A free lunch will be provided.
There will be presentations by Heather Taber from Senior Health Insurance benefits adviser, Pharmacist Jim Sharp from Interlake Pharmacy, and Dr. Joseph Abate MD, chief medical officer of Dirne CHC.
