COEUR d'ALENE - Playing for the first time this season at home, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings not only protected their home field, but they avenged their only loss of 2010 as they rolled past the Skyview Storm of Vancouver, Wash., 52-14 in a nonleague game at Viking Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Returning state 5A player of the year Chad Chalich completed 19 of 26 passes for four touchdowns and 316 yards and ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns for Coeur d'Alene.
"Skyview is a good team," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said. "Last week, we didn't play like we should have. We worked on what we needed to in practice this week and now we're playing pretty good."
Coeur d'Alene (3-0) will play its third straight Saturday game as the Vikings face Whitney High of Rocklin, Calif., in the finale of the four-game Idaho Football Classic next Saturday at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
"We expect the same out of Chad every time he takes the field," Amos said. "But he always delivers. He's a good teammate and exactly what you want from a quarterback."
After an early drive was stopped, Chalich pinned Skyview at the 5-yard line on their first possession, eventually taking the ball back after a 17-yard punt by Ross Armstrong.
Coeur d’Alene (3-0) opened the scoring shortly after as Chalich pitched the ball to Carlos Martinez, who ran 16 yards for the opening touchdown. Martinez and Chalich connected on a screen pass after a three-and-out to give Coeur d’Alene a 12-0 lead, following a failed conversion.
The play, which was a designed screen, was nearly ended by a sack for a loss.
“Chad thought it was a run play,” Amos said. “I guess we just got lucky on that one.”
“I didn’t see (Carlos) out on the route, so I thought it was a run,” said Chalich of the play. “He made a great play to get into the end zone.”
Skyview quarterback Kieran McDonagh threw the first of his two interceptions, with the ball deflecting off receiver Spencer Miles’ hands into the arms of junior defensive back Reece Mahaffy, who returned it 47 yards for a touchdown to give Coeur d’Alene an 18-0 lead after the first quarter.
Driving in the second quarter, McDonagh hit Mo Morrison on a 48-yard screen pass to move the Storm offense, but a fumble ended the drive as Keagan Dunn recovered the ball at the 25-yard line.
Coeur d’Alene drove the length of the field, helped by an offside penalty on 4th and 2, to resume the drive. Chalich hit Martinez again on a 25-yard pass to give the Vikings a 25-0 halftime lead.
Skyview (0-2) got on the board on the first play of the second half as Parker Henry ran 65 yards for a touchdown.
Coeur d’Alene answered as Chalich found receiver Deon Watson, who dodged two Skyview defenders on his way to a 43-yard touchdown and 31-7 lead.
Chalich also scored on a 57-yard quarterback draw to put Coeur d’Alene ahead 38-7 in the third quarter.
“With us running a spread offense, we can do a lot of different things,” Chalich said. “We’re looking to continue improving each week. We just played a great game today. Our defense picked it up from our last game.”
Watson and Chalich connected on a 6-yard pass to close out the scoring for Coeur d’Alene.
“Coeur d’Alene played awesome today,” Skyview coach Steve Kizer said. “Their quarterback was really good. I’m sorry that we didn’t play them any better than we did last year.”
Skyview beat Coeur d’Alene 36-34 last year, the Vikings’ only loss on the way to a state 5A championship.
“We worked our players hard all week,” Kizer said. “We may have over-trained for this game, because our guys came out really flat.”
Skyview made the drive to Coeur d’Alene on Friday, a move that Kizer second-guessed following the game.
“We haven’t been that flat in a game in five years,” Kizer said. “Maybe we should have just came up in one day like they did last year. They beat us in every way you can think of today. Coeur d’Alene is a pretty good football team. I hope they win another state championship. The quarterback is worth the price of admission right there.”
