McIntire seeks re-election in Hayden

Hayden Mayor Ron McIntire is running for a fourth term, and City Council member Dick Panabaker said he is pulling out of the race.
"It would be a different story if things weren't going so well," Panabaker said. "He's an awfully popular candidate. And as long as things are in good shape, there's no point in me getting in the middle of things and muddying the water."
Panabaker, a past mayor of the city, still has a couple years remaining on his council term.
That leaves Council member Nancy Lowery as McIntire's lone challenger. Two people have filed to run for her council seat.
McIntire, who filed at the deadline Friday, said, "I've always wanted to run for one more term."
McIntire, 74, said he really enjoys contributing to the city.
"We've accomplished so many things," he said.
Among them, he said, "We have built a city staff that works very well together."
McIntire owns 14 stores in Montana and Idaho, including the Super 1 grocery stores in North Idaho, and works six days a week.
With another term, McIntire wants to review the city's entire comprehensive plan.
He also wants to find some way to put more funding into the street department's budget.
The city needs to examine all the building and impact fees to make sure the costs aren't holding development back.
The city needs to review the downtown revitalization to make sure property and business owners along Government Way are not facing restrictions that are too tight, he said.
"We need to look at it and see what we really need to do to make it viable and usable property" along the city corridor, McIntire said.
