The National Parks Conservation Association will sponsor "Backbone of the World: A Journey Through Glacier National Park" at the O'Shaughnessy in Whitefish on Saturday, Sept. 17, with doors opening at 6 p.m. The event will start at 7 p.m. and include a presentation by photographer Steven Gnam, singing by the Crown Of The Continent Choir, and an auction of Gnam's photos. Cost is $5 adults and free for children.

Le Grizz ultramarathon

The 30th Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon will be held along Hungry Horse Reservoir on Saturday, Oct. 8. Sponsored by the Cheetah Herders Athletic Club, the footrace is managed primarily to get first-time ultradistance runners to the finish line. The completion rate over the past 29 years of the event is 95 percent. For more information and registration materials, visit online at www.cheetahherders.com. Registration deadline is Sept. 24.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
