COEUR d'ALENE - The rivalry between Lake City High and neighboring Coeur d'Alene doesn't need much help in maintaining its heat.
With temperatures in the low 90s, the Timberwolves held off the Vikings 2-0 in a 5A Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
The teams remained scoreless until the 70th minute when Lake City junior T.J. McWhorter scored on a penalty kick to give his team the lead.
"The match was kind of a circus," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "In my mind, it always is against Coeur d'Alene. Today, we benefited from two calls. Luckily, we had Tanner Horton in net."
Horton stopped a penalty kick by Coeur d'Alene's Adam Borsheim late in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
"I played with him on a club team over the summer," said Horton of Borsheim. "So I kind of knew his tendencies. Without our defense today, we couldn't have done so well against him."
The match began right as school was let out for the day.
"I wish it was later in the day so we could get the football team out to watch," Beadell said. "Our kids loved it because they got out of school earlier."
"You've got to come out focused, no matter what time the match is," Horton said. "That's what we did today. It was probably what everyone on our team was thinking about all day today. I've been thinking about this match since last week."
McWhorter scored on another penalty kick in the 74th minute for Lake City (3-3-1, 2-0 5A IEL), which travels to Northwest Christian on Monday.
"It was a great matchup for our kids," Beadell said. "It's a tough matchup for us against Coeur d'Alene. Adam (Borsheim) is a beast, but it is what it is. We're lucky to go to 2-0."
Keagan Shillington had two saves for Coeur d'Alene (5-2-1, 1-2), which travels to Moscow on Saturday.
"Keagan is a leader back there for us," Lake said. "If he played baseball, he'd be our center fielder or like a quarterback in football. But the PK is a tough play to stop."
Coeur d'Alene's only shot on goal was Borsheim's penalty kick in the first half.
“We’re disappointed to lose to a rival,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “Lake City played well and really rebounded after a couple of tough matches. My hats off to them and Chad for a good job today. “We’re frustrated with ourselves, but we’ll live to play another day.”
Coeur d’Alene moves to 1-2 in league, but will have their final three IEL games at home.
“We’re looking forward to facing them all again,” Lake said. “We need to practice and work on some things, but it will be nice to have the 5A games at home.”
