Charles B. "Chuck" Humphrey passed away at home on Sept. 13, 2011, with his loving family by his side. Chuck was born on Aug. 9, 1919, in Coeur d'Alene. The youngest of three sons, he graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1938. He excelled in track, football and basketball and held several records into the 1950s and 1960s. He attended the University of Idaho for two years before entering the U.S. Navy immediately following Pearl Harbor. Chuck entered the Navy in 1942 and received flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was assigned to anti-submarine patrol in the Atlantic Ocean and was in the battle group that captured the U-505. He was on carriers in the Atlantic until December 1944 when he was transferred to the Pacific Ocean for the last 10 months of the war.
While on leave in May 1944, he married Marian Stucker, his high school sweetheart. They had three children; Bob (Linda), of Jerome, Idaho; Patty (Rex) Robinson, of Boise; and Debbie (Chris) Booher, of Flower Mound, Texas.
After leaving the service Chuck completed his civil engineering degree at the University of Idaho and became a licensed engineer in 1953. He started working for the Idaho Highway Department in May 1954 as a senior resident engineer in Rigby, Idaho. In November 1956, he was promoted to assistant district engineer in Lewiston. After nine years in Lewiston, Chuck moved to Boise as the assistant materials engineer, later becoming the state materials supervisor until he retired in July 1982.
He is survived by his wife Marian, children Bob, Patty, and Debbie, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. They will miss him greatly. "We can't all be heroes; some of us get to stand on the curb and clap as they go by." - Will Rogers
