Hunter Killed by Grizzly

BONNERS FERRY — A hunter was attacked and killed by a grizzly bear Friday morning near the Montana state line, according to Boundary County Sheriff's officials.

The attack was reported shortly after 10 a.m. It occurred in the remote Buckhorn Mountain area about 15 miles northeast of Moyie Springs, the sherif's office said.

Another member of the hunting party shot and killed the attacking grizzly. The man who was attacked was fatally injured, however.

The names of the hunters were not immediately available. Sheriff's officials said the attack victim was not a Boundary County resident. His name was not released pending notification of his family.

Officials from the sheriff's office, the Idaho Department of Fish & Game and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are investigating the incident. A U.S. Border Patrol helicopter was used to fly investigators to the scene.

No further information was immediately available.

UPDATE 

Boundary County Sheriff's deputies have arrived at the scene of a fatal grizzly attack that was reported at about 10:07 a.m. today, and have determined that the attack and the shooting of the grizzly bear took place on the Montana side of Buckhorn Mountain. While deputies remain on scene to assist with the recovery effort, iinvestigation into the incident has been turned over to Montana authorities and the Lincoln County, Montana, sheriff's office is taking control of the scene.
