RATHDRUM - His number may not have been listed correctly in the program, but by the end of the night, it didn't matter what jersey Lakeland junior Corey Hansel had on.
Hansel's 28-yard run to give Lakeland a 29-26 lead with 3:20 remaining held up as the Hawks defeated the Timberlake Tigers in a nonleague game at Corbit Field on Friday night.
"The kid is pretty quick," said Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer of Hansel. "We'd been trying to set up that run all day with the short pass. It was a great run and he just put it in the endzone."
Eric Cooper hit Matt Horne on a 39-yard post pass to set up the go-ahead score for Lakeland (3-1).
"It was great," said Hansel, who is listed as No. 34 but wears No. 16. "I saw the goal line and just dove for it. It feels great and I hope we can come back and do it again next year. We've still got a long season."
Cooper threw for 351 yards for Lakeland, despite playing with a sore left hamstring.
“He hadn’t practiced all week,” Kiefer said. “He was literally a game-time decision.”
Cooper rode an exercise bike along the sidelines to keep the hamstring loose while the Hawks were on defense.
“It really shows his leadership,” Kiefer said. “He played really well.”
Lakeland won last season’s matchup at Timberlake High 27-26 on the final play of the game.
“They’re a really good team,” said Kiefer of Timberlake (2-2). “That is a pretty dang good football team we just beat.”
Chadley Miller ran for 92 yards for Lakeland, which travels to Post Falls on Friday.
Timberlake moved into scoring position on its opening play from scrimmage on a 50-yard halfback pass from Devin Smith to Jerry Theil to set up a 2-yard run by Smith in the first quarter.
Christian Heth had 142 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns for Timberlake, which has a bye next Friday.
Heth scored on 45-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter to give Timberlake a 12-7 lead.
“It was a great high school game,” Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said. “Both sides played their hearts out tonight. It just came down to a few mistakes.”
Heth’s 1-yard run with 3:15 remaining in the third to give Timberlake a 26-21 lead.
With less than five minutes remaining, Timberlake quarterback Brian Cronnelly’s pass to Theil fell incomplete on fourth down and 5. Timberlake attempted to drive the field late, but a screen pass from Cronnelly to Heth came up short to turn the ball back over on downs.
“It shouldn’t have came down to that final play,” Albertson said. “We had our chances, but didn’t capitalize. We’ve played a lot of tough teams so far. Hopefully this makes us a little more hungry the next time we come out.”
Since Timberlake opened in 1998, Lakeland now leads the series 10-4, winning four of the last five games dating back to 2007.
Timberlake returns to action at Priest River in their Intermountain League opener on Sept. 30.
