Northwest 4

North Idaho 1

COEUR d'ALENE - One week later, Northwest won by the same score it did last Friday in Powell, Wyo., but this time it was a "better game, though," NIC coach Ken Thompson said.

"Defensively we were much more organized," he said. "We kept our shape more compact; our wide guys forced the ball into the middle. Last week, they just killed us in the flanks."

NIC (2-2-1) tied the game in the 38th minute when Chad Ward ran down a ball played into space by Eliseo Santana, and knocked it past the onrushing keeper into the net.

NIC plays host to the University of Idaho club team on Sunday at Eisenwinter Field.

First half - 1, NWC, Leonardo Mederios (unassisted) 4:00. 2, NIC, Chad Ward (Eliseo Santana), 38:00. Second half - 3, NWC, Adrian Eticerio (Matt Hawkins), 60:00. 4, NWC, Helio Junior (unassisted), 80:00. 5, NWC, Eticerio (unassisted), 89:00.

Shots on goal - NWC 9, NIC 6.

VOLLEYBALL

NIC goes 1-1 on first day of CSI tourney

TWIN FALLS - North Idaho College, ranked 20th in the NJCAA, knocked off No. 4 Miami Dade 25-15, 25-18, 25-21 in its first match Friday at the Starr Corporation Invitational at the College of Southern Idaho.

Yang Yang had 15 kills, nine digs and two blocks for NIC. Sabrina Ewing added seven kills, Kendall Bergsten had four of the team's six aces, and Sierra Pancho had 25 assists.

"We got them out of their game by tipping," NIC coach Kandice Kelly said. "We definitely outsmarted them, because they were way bigger."

In its next match, NIC lost to No. 7 Salt Lake Community College 25-14, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18.

Pancho totaled 32 assists and 13 digs for the Cardinals. Yang had 14 kills and four blocks, Janele Vogt had 10 kills, and Kelly praised the serve-receive of Emily Sarff in both matches.

"We weren't used to their fast-tempo game," Kelly said of Salt Lake. "Their sets were a lot lower ... they don't make very many errors."

NIC concludes the tourney today vs. No. 12 Barton (Kansas) and Yavapai (Prescott, Ariz.).
