COEUR d'ALENE - No matter how you cut it, that's a lot of wood.

An estimate 35 volunteers split and delivered 40 cords of wood Thursday for ElderHelp of North Idaho during the Day of Caring hosted by United Way of Kootenai County.

The firewood was divided between 22 seniors in Kootenai and Bonner counties.

ElderHelp spokesman John Corcoran said between automatic splitters and the old-fashioned kind, volunteers finished a job that was expected to take more than two months.

"It was like ants," he said. "It was an amazing day."

A fundraiser for ElderHelp is also coming up next week.

There will be wine, food and a putt putt golf tourney that begins around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Parkside Terrace, 601 Front.

Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door. There will also be a silent auction.
