MOSCOW — They proved they were the class of the 5A level last year with a state championship.

Now, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings are running through the West Coast.

Coeur d’Alene, which beat Skyview of Vancouver, Wash., 52-14 last Saturday, rolled past Whitney High of Rocklin, Calif., 55-6 in the final game of the Idaho Football Classic on Saturday night at the Kibbie Dome.

The Vikings jumped out to a 24-0 lead after the first quarter as Chad Chalich scored on a 2-yard quarterback draw and threw for three more scores in the quarter.

“We didn’t see this coming,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “Our kids for two weeks in a row have played outstanding football.”

Coeur d’Alene (4-0), the top ranked team in the Idaho 5A ranks, stretched the advantage to 38-0 on scores from Deon Watson and Reece Mahaffy in the second quarter.

Whitney (2-1) finally broke through late in the first half as Christian Daniels dove for a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jake Rodrigues, who has committed to Oregon next fall.

Carlos Martinez closed the first half on a 5-yard draw to give the Vikings a 45-6 halftime lead. Martinez also scored on an 11-yard pass from Chalich in the first quarter and finished with 154 yards of total offense.

“It all starts with the line,” Martinez said. “Chad and I are playing like we’re in the backyard. We just go out and have fun. And right now, we’re having lots of fun.”

Whitney struggled to get any momentum as 11 first half penalties, including six personal fouls, put it in a hole with 110 yards lost due to fouls.

“We knew what they were going to do and we didn’t come out and execute,” Whitney coach Mike Gimenez said. “We just didn’t block it. It’s on us to get better in all areas.”

Other than that, Gimenez enjoyed his time in North Idaho.

“It was a great time,” Gimenez said. “Everything was great — except the way we played.”

Coeur d’Alene travels to Sandpoint on Friday.
