Jim and Inez Florence
65th Anniversary
Jim and Inez Florence celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Sept. 17, 2011. They are World War II sweethearts.
They met in 1944 when Jim completed boot camp training in San Diego, Calif. At this time Jim received a 72-hour pass, unable to return to his home in northern California. Jim called his sister, Frances, in Los Angels, Calif., and asked if he could come to their home for a visit. On the phone Jim heard his brother-in-law in the background say, "ask Jim if he would like to have a date with a cute little blonde?" Jim told his sister he would like to have a date, there was no way Jim would refuse such an offer. As it turned out Inez was the baby sitter for his sister's two boys.
The first date was such a success that Jim asked Inez for a second the following weekend if he could get another pass before shipping out. Inez said she would like that. On that date Jim proposed and Inez accepted. Even though they were only 17 years old at the time, they both knew instantly they were very much in love. This was June 28, 1944.
Jim was discharged March 6, 1946, and on Sept. 17, 1946, Jim and Inez were married in Modesto, Calif. After Jim attended college in Long Beach, Calif., they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where they raised three children; Connie Thompson of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Frances La Verne of Tracy, Calif., and Jim Florence Jr. of Coeur d'Alene.
After Jim retired from American Broadcasting Company and Inez from Consolidated Freightways, they moved to Coeur d'Alene on Nov. 7, 1984. They recently moved to Garden Plaza Retirement Center in Post Falls where they currently make their home.
