March 7, 1921 - Sept. 19, 2011

James Harry Hogue was born March 7, 1921, in Portland, Ore. He was the sixth of 10 children born to Walter and Emma (Ritchey) Hogue. Jim grew up in Naples graduating from Bonners Ferry High School in 1939.

Without a chance to attend college, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp at Lake Chatcolet, then on to mining at Uncle Clarence's gold mine in Montana. With war clouds gathering around the globe, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp where he graduated from flight school. Five of his brothers also joined the military during the war, becoming one of the few sets of six brothers to serve in World War II. All six returned safely.

Retiring as a pilot from the United States Air Force as a Lt. Col., he went on to work in the lumber industry until his retirement in 1986. Retiring to his wife's family home in Naples, he spent many years helping to establish the Cabinet Mountains Water District and working on the Boundary County History Book and organizing class and family reunions.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Bettilu (Krogseth) Hogue; his brothers, Clifford and Howard Hogue; and children: Bill (Luz) and Russ (Delana) Hogue, Janice (Kevin) Ritzer and Patti (Harold) Wilkinson; and daughter-in-law Barbara Hogue, widow of son Jim N. Hogue. There are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Jim N. Hogue, in 2006.

Jim loved the mountains and streams of clear cold rushing water. He always wanted to see what was over the next hill or around the next corner. He said he wished he could live 20 more years as he had so many things he wanted to do.
