SALT LAKE CITY - Leyla Rendondo had 23 kills and 14 digs as the seventh-ranked Salt Lake Bruins (14-4) rallied from a two-game deficit to beat the 13th-ranked North Idaho Cardinals 22-25, 15-25, 25-17, 26-24, 15-10 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference volleyball opener for both schools on Friday at Bruin Arena.

"We came out and stuck with our game plan," NIC coach Kandice Kelly said. "They made a lot of errors in the first couple games, but we didn't come out as fired up as we should have. We didn't stick to the gameplan in the third and fourth game and didn't step up late in the game. Salt Lake is a good team, but hopefully we'll come back and play well against Snow."

Yang Yang had 25 kills, 16 digs and five blocks, Janele Vogt 13 kills, Sierra Pancho 48 assists and Emily Sarff 18 digs for NIC (11-7), which travels to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, today.

"Yang does everything for us," Kelly said. "Between her and Janele, they had 75 percent of our kills, which is unheard of. Sierra played well also tonight finding players on offense."

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. - Carissa Christensen recorded a hat trick in the first half as the Cardinals defeated the Mustangs in a nonconference match, clinching a berth in the NJCAA District B tournament at the site of the Region 6 winner.

"They played with a very high defensive line allowing (Carissa) Christensen and (Aubree) Mercier to repeatedly get behind them for good looks at the goal," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "We got a little sloppy in our defending toward the end of the game."

Mercier also recorded a hat trick, with two goals in the second half for NIC (8-0), which faces Western Nebraska on Sunday in Rock Springs.

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Mike Leptich scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute for the Cardinals in a nonconference loss to the Mustangs.

Our back line didn’t have the best decision making today. They buried their chances and just did a better job with their opportunities.”
