Vikings romp past Sandpoint

SANDPOINT - It was the Chad Chalich show in the first half of Coeur d'Alene's 88-12 drubbing of Sandpoint under the Friday night lights of Barlow Stadium.
The Vikings' senior quarterback was perfect for the first two quarters, literally, connecting on 17 of 17 passes for 287 yards and five touchdowns, and also rushing for 51 yards and another two touchdowns as the Vikings, ranked No. 1 in 5A, scored early and often, building a 60-6 lead at half.
Boasting a wealth of team speed at nearly every position, the Vikings (5-0) ran roughshod over the Bulldogs (1-3).
"He's very good," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said of Chalich. "We have a lot of good guys around him."
One of those good guys was receiver Bubba Duran, who hauled in three of the first-half touchdowns.
The Vikings also scored three touchdowns on interception returns, as Brennen Kane returned two pick sixes and Joe Roletto another.
"It could have been a letdown, but the kids were ready to go. That's the sign of a mature team," said Amos, whose backups continued to score in the second half. "It (the final score) kind of took some of the joy out of it."
Roletto and Addison Johnson also added touchdown catches, while Ty Holgate scored twice on the ground and Gunnar Amos once.
"We're not going to talk about this game again. We're looking ahead to Lewiston," Sandpoint coach Mike Mitchell said. "I'll take the blame for this loss. I think we made them look a lot better than they were."
Coeur d'Alene has a bye on Friday and will host Moscow on Oct. 7.
