Rock burst Friday at the Galena
Workers in U.S. Silver's Wallace office were notified of a larger-than-usual rock burst at the Galena Mine Friday afternoon when their windows began to shake.
It came from the 3,000 Level at the end of the shift, so no personnel were involved. No injuries were reported and routine mining activities weren't impacted. There was not much damage, but some repair activity will take place in the near future.
Federal regulators were notified as per established protocols.
Rock bursts are sporadic seismic events when rock spontaneously fractures. They are common in deep mines.
Economic council members named
Two new members have been named to the statewide Economic Advisory Council, filling positions that expired in July.
Margaret Watson, a former mayor of Parma, will fill the council's at-large position. Watson has worked at the J.C. Watson Company for 30 years and has had a long relationship with city and economic development organizations.
Watson replaces CJ Buck, president of Buck Knives in Post Falls.
Arlen Wittrock, a public affairs and communication consultant for ON Semiconductor in Pocatello, will fill the Region 5 position on the council, replacing Emma Gebo.
STCU receives another honor
For the third consecutive year, STCU has been judged among the nation's highest-performing credit unions by Raddon Financial Group.
Raddon considers a vast array of data provided by more than 500 credit unions to measure growth, service and overall performance. STCU was named among the top 20 in 2008, 2009 - and again in 2010.
Only two other credit unions from the Pacific Northwest received recognition this year: America's Credit Union (Fort Lewis, Wash.) and Sound Credit Union (Tacoma).
Raddon honored STCU and nine other large credit unions (those with more than $500 million in assets) with its 2011 Crystal Performance Award. Ten small credit unions (with less than $500 million in assets) also were honored.
