The Boston Red Sox found another way to lose, this time on a broken-bat single and an inside-the-park homer, and their 6-3 defeat against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night dropped them into a tie in the AL wild-card race.

Boston's 17th loss in 22 games enabled Tampa Bay to finally pull even in the duel for the league's final playoff spot. The Rays, who beat the New York Yankees 5-2, trailed by nine games after play on Sept. 3.

With the score 2-all in the sixth inning, Boston starter Josh Beckett allowed four runs in an uprising that began with Vladimir Guerrero becoming the career hits leader among Dominican-born players.

Rays 5, Yankees 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., all-Star James Shields came within one out of his 12th complete game and Kelly Shoppach homered to help Tampa Bay keep the pressure on Boston in the AL wild-card race with a victory over the New York.

B.J. Upton drove in two runs with a third-inning double off Hector Noesi. Shoppach homered for the second straight day for the Rays, who've won three straight and are 15-8 since Sept. 2, when they trailed the Red Sox by nine games.

Tigers 14, Indians 0: Doug Fister pitched eight strong innings and Alex Avila drove in three runs to help host Detroit beat Cleveland.

Fister, who allowed three singles while striking out nine, is 7-0 with a 0.65 ERA in his last eight outings. Royals 7, Twins 3: At Minneapolis, Melky Cabrera became the first Kansas City player in 11 years to get 200 hits and Mike Moustakas hit the go-ahead home run in a four-run sixth inning as the Royals topped the Minnesota.

White Sox 4, Blue Jays 3: Tyler Flowers hit a three-run homer, rookie Dylan Axelrod threw six shutout innings and host Chicago beat Toronto.

Rangers 4, Angels 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer, Michael Young added an eighth-inning RBI single, and Texas eliminated Los Angeles from the playoff race.

Phillies 4, Braves 2: Host Atlanta squandered an early two-run lead against Cliff Lee as playoff-bound Philadelphia rallied over the Braves.

Atlanta holds a 1-game lead in the wild-card race over St. Louis.

Reds 6, Mets 5: Chris Heisey hit a go-ahead, three-run homer just moments after making a diving catch to lead Cincinnati at New York in the opener of their season-ending series.

Nationals 6, Marlins 4: At Miami, Michael Morse hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth, and Washington rallied to beat Florida.

Astros 5, Cardinals 4, 10 inn.: St. Louis missed out on a chance to join Atlanta atop the wild-card standings when Brian Bogusevic scored on Angel Sanchez's bunt in the 10th to lift host Houston over the Cardinals.

Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 2: At Phoenix, Matt Kemp hit a three-run homer to help Los Angeles beat Arizona.

Pirates 9, Brewers 8: Alex Presley homered to lead off the game and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh, lifting Pittsburgh at Milwaukee.

Padres 2, Cubs 0: Mat Latos took a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out nine in seven innings to lead host San Diego past Chicago.

Giants 3, Rockies 1: Ryan Vogelsong threw seven shutout innings to lead host San Francisco past Colorado.

• Ozzie traded to Marlins: White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was released from his contract, and, according to sources, he was traded late Monday to the Florida Marlins for two minor leaguers.

The team announced the move following its 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
