COEUR d’ALENE — A 19-year-old Hayden man has agreed to be sentenced on a felony charge of injury to a child stemming from a December incident with his 18-month-old stepdaughter.

Zacharee J. Wright has entered an Alford plea, not admitting guilt but acknowledging prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him at trial. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 21 in 1st District Court for Kootenai County, according to court documents.

Authorities accused Wright of pinning the girl face down on a concrete floor in a cold storage room in the basement of his home.

A 25-pound bag of drink mix or flour was laid on her back to keep her down. One of her arms was stuck behind her back, documents said.

The baby was not seriously injured in the Dec. 5 incident, at the home on the 1100 block of East Whispering Pines.

The child was found by someone else at the house, and law enforcement was called.

According to a Kootenai County sheriff’s report, Wright admitted to investigators that he stuck the girl in the storage room to get her to go to sleep and so she wouldn’t pull any of the glass jars of food down from the shelves.

The child’s mother told investigators she thought Wright had placed the baby in a safe, quiet place to sleep. She estimated her daughter had been in the storage room for 30 to 45 minutes.

Wright is out of custody as he awaits sentencing.
