QUINCY - Two league wins was just what the doctor ordered for the Jacks to get back in contention as Quincy swept a twin bill from Toppenish Saturday.

The Jacks had little resistance in both games as they took the morning contest 6-2, and the afternoon game, 13-3.

"It was nice to finally get the monkey off our backs and get our first two wins of the season," first year coach Matt Tait said. "I was proud of the effort the guys turned in."

The wins put Quincy at 2-0 in league play and 2-6 overall.

The Wildcats got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, much to the chagrin of the home team. But Quincy got two back in the bottom of the second to tie the game 2-2.

That was all the runs Toppenish was able to bring across the plate as starting pitcher for the  Jacks Jason Garrison limited the Wildcats to two hits and struck out three Toppenish batters in four innings. Chad Omillin came on for three innings of relief and didn't allow a hit, while striking out six hitters.

Toppenish stranded nine runners on base for the ball game.

"Both guys pitched well for us," Tait said. "Chad has done a nice job developing into our mid-reliever spot. He's got pretty good control of his pitches, but  is still  trying to gain confidence on the mound."

John Lindquist led the offensive attack for the Jacks going 1-for-4 at the plate with a double and 2 RBI.

Game two saw the bats really come alive for the Jacks as the team scored 13 runs off seven hits.

The contest started out much like the first game with the Wildcats taking an early 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Quincy brought three runners across the plate in the bottom of the second and five each in the third and fourth innings to blow the game wide open, 13-2. Toppenish got a run in the top of the fourth to make it 13-3.

Cody Berens and Dallas Basset were the big sticks for the Jacks. Bassett was 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles, a double and 4 RBI. Berens had three hits in four at bats with two singles, a double and 4 RBI.

"I was really proud of the way Cody produced at the plate," Tait said. "Dallas did a good job hitting in the No. 9 spot ... he was kind of like our secondary leadoff hitter in the lineup today."

Tait, obviously happy with the outcome of the games, said the team still has a lot of work to do to shore up mistakes made in both as the Jacks committed a total of eight errors on the day.

"We started out kind of shaky in both games, but were able to overcome the errors," he said. "We set a goal at the beginning of the week to take both of these games and we did. And if we can cut down on the mistakes and play like we did today, we should be at .500 in the next couple of weeks."

Quincy is back in action April 5 when the team travels to Leavenworth to take on the Kodiaks in a non-league game.

The Jacks get back to league play on the road against Wapato for a twin bill April 7.
