COEUR d'ALENE - A familiar face came up big for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 5A Inland Empire League softball game on Tuesday with another strong showing in the circle.
But it was a newcomer to the T-Wolves lineup that came up big at the plate.
Casey Stangel struck out 10 and didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning as the visiting Lake City Timberwolves defeated the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 5-2 in a 5A Inland Empire League softball game at Larry Schwenke Field.
"Casey threw the ball pretty well today," Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann said. "We had a couple of goofy errors, but were able to do enough to get a win."
Lake City scored all five of its runs in the first four innings, before being limited to just two hits in the final three innings.
"I was happy that we came out swinging," Tolzmann said. "We attacked from the first inning on and had runners on in each inning. Our goal is to compete and score runs every inning."
Freshman JaeCie Wilson had two hits and two RBIs for Lake City (6-1, 3-0 5A IEL).
"JaeCie had an awesome weekend in Boise," Tolzmann said. "She just seems to get better and better each and every game. She's building confidence each game. She'll be fun to watch."
Wilson drove in Jordyn McCracken with her second RBI of the game in the fourth inning to give Lake City a 4-0 lead.
"I was really nervous coming into the game," said Wilson. "I just tried to brush it off and play my game."
Elli Tindall broke up Stangel's no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the sixth with a single. Zoe Clark followed with another single and Chelsey Rasmussen reached on an error to load the bases.
"We got to work on putting the ball in play," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "We worked on shortening our swings and making them play defense. We just did not play defense today."
Lindsie Scholwinski hit a two-run single into center field to pull Coeur d'Alene within 5-2 in the sixth. It marked the first time the Vikings scored against Lake City since the 2010 season. The Timberwolves shut out Coeur d'Alene in all five meetings last season.
“Once we figured out we could shorten our swing and put the ball in play, we started to battle,” Bieber said. “We just let them score too many unearned runs.”
Scholwinski had four strikeouts for Coeur d’Alene (2-1, 0-1), which is scheduled to travel to Lakeland today.
“I thought Lindsie pitched great today,” Bieber said. “All day long, she was hitting her spots. We never want her to throw right down the middle, but she ended up having to. There just wasn’t a strike zone today.”
