COEUR d'ALENE - The cupboard wasn't completely bare after Coeur d'Alene graduated nine players from last year's team which placed fourth at the state 5A baseball tournament.

Among the returnees were senior Joe Roletto, junior Levi Pereira and senior Bubba Duran, who are hitting 2-3-4 for the Vikings this year.

On Tuesday, those three players went a combined 10 for 10 with a double, two triples and a home run, and drove in 12 runs as Coeur d'Alene beat visiting Lake City 14-3 in five innings in 5A Inland Empire League play Tuesday on a rare pleasant afternoon so far this spring at Ted Page Field.

"They do a good job; those guys have been around for a long time," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "They have quality approaches, and I like the fact that we reload. We're young, but we still have some experience."

Roletto, the second baseman, went 4 for 4, scored four runs and drove in five for Coeur d'Alene (3-2). He hit a two-run single in the second inning, a two-run double in the third and an RBI triple in the fifth.

Pereira, the catcher, was 3 for 3 with three runs and four RBIs. His two-run homer over the left field fence in the fifth inning ended the game on the 10-run rule.

Duran, the shortstop, went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, including a two-run triple in the first inning.

“We’re hot right now; we hit really well today,” said Duran, who pitched a 1-2-3 fifth with two strikeouts. “We have an approach, and we stick to that approach,” he added, choosing not to share what that approach was. “It’s a secret.”

Lake City (0-2) was playing for the first time in 25 days, since losing 18-0 in its season opener March 9 at Hanford High of Richland, Wash.

Alec Barrowcliff-Turrell hit an RBI single in the first inning, and Sam Fortis’ run-scoring double in the second tied the game at 3. But it was all Vikings after that, as those were the only two hits of the game for Lake City. Coeur d’Alene finished with 13.

“For our second game out of the chute, we made vast improvement over the last time we played,” Lake City coach Al Bevacqua said. “We came out swinging the bat very well. Schmidt kept us off-balance; we let the speed of his pitches dictate our bat speed. We just have a lot of growing up to do. We have a young squad, and we have to grow up quick — we have a lot of games back-to-back with the weather.”

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lakeland today at 4. Lake City visits Post Falls on Thursday.

Lake City 210 00 — 3 2 0

Coeur d’Alene 343 13 — 14 13 2

Game called in 5th inning due to 10-run rule.
