YAKIMA - Moses Lake boys golf fared well on the links this week. The team placed fifth out of 22 teams at The Lee Dolquist Invitational at Apple Tree Golf Course Tuesday, and took third at The Jack Barnes Invite in Wenatchee Monday.
The Chiefs finished with a score of 325 on the par 72 course at Apple Tree. Richland took top honors with 300, and Hanford was three strokes back with 303.
Brenden Cox tied for seventh overall with a score of 76 on the Par 72 course to lead the way for Moses Lake.
"Brenden played very well," coach JR Cox said. "I think he was disappointed with his Monday round and wanted to show he was better than the 80 he shot at Three Lakes. Apple Tree is a tough course, and having all five guys shoot under 90 was exciting. It shows we are getting better as we enter the heavy league match portion of our season."
Teammates Nick Sutherland carded an 82, Austin Rogers shot 83, Brody Milbrandt turned in an 84, and Tanner Montgomery finished with 86.
WENATCHEE - Brody Milbrandt and Tanner Montgomery shot 78 on the par 69 course at The Jack Barnes Invite in Wenatchee Monday to lead Moses Lake to a third-place finish.
Fifteen teams participated in the event. Mt. Spokane placed first with 285 points. Richland was just four stokes off the pace with 289.
The Chiefs and Mead High School were knotted at 318, but Moses Lake won the playoff to bring home the third place trophy. Eastmont shot 319, and host Wenatchee finished fifth with 322.
"Brody made a birdie on the first playoff hole (par 5) to beat Mead," coach Cox said. "He was almost on the green in two and got up and down for a birdie. Watching him play you would never think he was a freshman because he always looks calm and focused. Anytime we can bring a trophy home from an invite it's always special because there are so many good teams we compete against."
Mt. Spokane's Nick Thurston was the low round medalist with 68.
The Chiefs Brendan Cox carded an 80, and Nick Sutherland turned in an 82 and Derek Hansen finished with 92.
"Overall, I was proud of our effort both days, especially during a break from school," Cox said. "These guys spend hours practicing and it shows in the results they are getting, We have our second league match (POD) on Monday at Wine Valley in Walla Walla."
