Yahoo!'s job cuts won't affect Quincy

QUINCY - Yahoo!'s roughly 2,000 job cuts announced Wednesday won't affect its Quincy data center.
There will be no layoffs in our area, said Lisa Karstetter, Yahoo!'s Quincy-based community relations/date center development employee.
According to a company statement, the move is part of "taking important steps to reshape the company for the future."
"Today's actions are an important next step toward a bold, new Yahoo! - smaller, nimbler, more profitable and better equipped to innovate as fast as our customers and our industry require," stated Yahoo! CEO Scott Thompson. "Unfortunately, reaching that goal requires the tough decision to eliminate positions. We deeply value our people and all they've contributed."
The company expects to gain about $375 million in annualized savings once the employee changes are finished.
The restructuring should help Yahoo! grow by reacting to customers' needs faster and "competing more effectively in areas where it can win, according to the company statement.
"Yahoo! has identified key parts of the business, a select group of core businesses, the platforms that support those core businesses, and the data that drives deep personalization for users and ROI (return on investment) for advertisers," according to the company statement.
Thompson became CEO of the company in January and announced the job reductions Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
His career background includes working as president, senior vice president and chief technology officer of eBay's PayPal business in 2008, executive vice president of technology solutions at Visa's Inovant subsidiary and chief information officer at Barclays Global Investments.
The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif. and broke ground on its Quincy data center in 2006.
The new Quincy facility was complete and became operational in 2007, according to the Grant County Economic Development Council's website.
