PULLMAN - Jeff Tuel threw two touchdown passes and the defense registered 12 sacks during Washington State's scrimmage at Martin Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars worked through 110 plays on a sunny day in front of a couple hundred fans. The defense highlighted the day with 12 "sacks" and four takeaways as a sack was awarded to the defense when they were able to grab the quarterback. Defensive end Logan Mayes led the way with four sacks while defensive tackle Xavier Cooper added three. Travis Long, Jordan Pu'u Robinson, Anthony Laurenzi, Lenard Williams and Eddie Releford each recorded a sack.
The defense also saw Mitchell Peterson, Kyle McCartney and Daniel Simmons pick off passes and Matthew Simmons and Casey Locker combine to force a fumble on the day's opening series.
The offense settled in and received a couple big plays from Andrei Lintz and Gino Simone early on as Lintz caught a pass from Tuel and rumbled 40 yards for a big gain. Lintz capped the No. 1 offense's first drive with a 3-yard touchdown catch from Tuel.
Newcomer wideout Rahmel Dockery made the most of his only catch, leaping high to corral an 11-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone from Cody Clements.
Simone led all receivers with seven catches for 101 yards including a 43-yard touchdown from David Gilbertson.
The Cougars continue spring drills Tuesday at 3:10 p.m.
