NIC announces hall of fame class

COEUR d'ALENE - The North Idaho College athletic department has announced the inductees for their fourth annual Athletics Hall of Fame class, to be held along with their annual awards banquet and auction on May 5 at the Edminster Student Union Building.
The 2012 class includes:
Len Mattei - As coach and coordinator of women's athletics, was a pioneer in the development of intercollegiate sports for women at NIC. With the passage of Title IX, the first teams were formed in 1976. She became volleyball coach, assistant women's track coach and the school's first coordinator of women's athletics.
Mary Anderson - A former Coeur d'Alene High standout in women's basketball, was a two-time first team All-Region player and earned the distinction of being selected the regional tournament MVP despite losing in the tournament championship game. As a sophomore, she led NIC to the Region 18 championship and school's second NJCAA tournament appearance in 1986.
Paul Wilson - Considered one of the best contact hitters in NIC baseball history, earning SWAC All-Region honors in his freshman and sophomore years. Wilson hit .376 with a team-high 28 RBIs as a freshman and hit .379 with 15 doubles and scored a team-high 36 runs and was struck out only 13 times in 278 at-bats over two seasons in 1996-1997.
Crystal Smith-Johnson - Was one of the most decorated athletes in Cardinal track and field history. Smith-Johnson was a four-time NJCAA All-American and led the school to a third place finish at the 2001 Indoor Championships. She was a two-time region and national champion, and held the national record in the weight throw. Smith-Johnson also excelled off the track, earning Dean's List recognition for two seasons.
Don Sausser - Was selected in the special category of contributor to the program. Sausser has been a longtime supporter of Cardinal athletics since 1975 and continues to attend Booster Club luncheons and athletic events on a regular basis. He is a former Booster Club president and was honored as Member of the Year in 2004-05. Sausser formerly served on the Board of Trustees, and continues to provide assistance to the athletic department as a photographer, host parent and supporter of NIC scholarships.
A social will begin at 5 p.m., with awards and the induction ceremony starting at 6.
