MOSES LAKE - It took two minutes into the second overtime period before the match between Moses Lake and Davis was settled Saturday at Lions Field.
And when it was all said and done, the Chiefs pulled out a 3-2 win over the Pirates to maintain their hold on first place, and improve to 5-1 in the CBBN. Moses Lake is 7-2 overall.
"We played just well enough to win today," coach Bill Bertram said. "It wasn't pretty, but the boys hung in there and ground out an ugly win."
Davis struck first with a score at the 10th minute of action to go up 1-0.
Moses Lake didn't waste much time drawing even as Adolfo Cortez rocketed a 30-yard free kick at the 12 minute-mark to get the Chiefs back in it 1-1.
The Pirates made it 2-1 on a questionable roughing call by the ref, who awarded Davis a penalty kick 20 minutes into the contest.
Moses Lake's Rehn Reiley tied the match on a header off an assist by Cortez that got by the Pirates keeper just prior to intermission, at the 36 minute-mark.
"Adolfo hammered in a direct kick, which gave the Davis keeper fits to tie it 1-1," Bertram said. "And freshman defender Rehn Reiley picked a good time to contribute with a nice header from an Adolfo to make it 2-2."
Neither team scored in the second half of action and the match went to overtime.
The first five minute extra period went scoreless as well, so the Pirates and Chiefs went at it again in the second overtime.
Two minutes into the period, A.J. Montes found the back of the net on a penalty kick at the 87th minute of play to give the Moses Lake the win.
Luis Villa, the Chiefs keeper, had six saves for the game. Moses Lake had 12 shots on frame. Davis had 10.
The Chiefs start the second half of league play Wednesday, when they host Wenatchee at Lions Field at 7 p.m.
