DEQ checks on Lake Cd'A paint spill

COEUR d'ALENE - Although some paint ended up on the waves off Boothe Park on Lake Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday afternoon, there was no emergency, assured Greg Delavan, owner of Delavan's Marina.
He hired an environmental clean-up company after some paint fell on the water while a crew was repainting metal frames for the marina.
"I wasn't there. I got a call, they said, 'it's starting to leave a sheen on the water, come here to help clean up,'" Delavan said, standing by the marina as he watched the cleanup crew work. "Not long after, the fire department showed up."
The Department of Environmental Quality, too, which had also received a call.
Delavan said although he couldn't estimate how much substance ended up on the water, it was contained within the marina docks with containment booms.
He said mostly chips of old paint fell in the water, missing drop cloths that had been placed to catch them. Some spray paint that missed its target ended up in the waves, too.
"Nothing really spilled, just dust," Delavan said of the paint particles.
He added that a DEQ representative confirmed the situation was not dire, and left it up to Delavan to clean it up himself or hire a company.
The regional DEQ office was closed on Tuesday afternoon before representatives could be contacted.
Delavan hired Able Clean-Up Technologies to retrieve the paint off the surface, and a crew was using vacuums on the waves in the late afternoon.
Delavan said things could be worse.
"At least it's a nice day," he said. "It's just a mess we get to clean up."
