Get it going on

Exercise... If it's the last thing on your list or the first thing to get rid of when you get "too busy," just hold on one minute. Your mind and your body need it everyday and your family will thank you for taking care of yourself. Remember, if you aren't healthy, they won't be either. They need you to be at your best and your exercise regime is how to keep your body and mind in sync. Oh, the excuse list is long and the interruptions are many and to make a commitment to yourself in this way is a huge step but you just have to do it.

Years ago Joan Lunden was interviewed about her ability to take her health seriously everyday when she was in such a high profile position and she said "I just schedule it in on my calendar like any other appointment."

Years ago a beautiful nurse came to our health and wellness fair with back pain and dysfunction and a history of diabetes. She was a widower who was raising her granddaughter and caring for her elderly mother alone. Her plate was pretty full. She was talented and capable and overworked and tired. Her weight had become an issue and her diabetes was becoming more of a problem. She wasn't sure there was anytime left in the day for herself and her health.

We shared with her that without optimal health things can get bad quite rapidly. She was frustrated and wasn't sure she could make the change necessary. We explained that lifestyle changes are very difficult and the first month is the hardest. She said she would think about it. A few hours later she was back. She had done some thinking she said and she realized that she needed to do something and she was ready to get on board. She recognized her health was the most important thing she owned and she decided to make the attempt to "get it going on."

We loved her desire and we set about putting all the pieces together for her to begin walking daily 20 to 30 minutes a day and gave her a quick easy home stretching and strengthening regime. So get out your iPhone, smart phone or calendar and set your appointment with yourself and do not let anyone get in the way of you taking care of yourself.

All about pelvic health

Kegel mania started years ago. In fact most of the women I know have heard about Kegel exercises, even if they don't really understand them or know how to do them very well. Often women will say, "I think I'm doing it right, but I'm really not sure."

T'was the night before

When I was little I loved the magic of the poem “The Night Before Christmas.” My parents had a well-worn book that had beautiful illustrated pictures and they would read it to me each Christmas season. As soon as I could read it myself I would slowly read each page and get lost in my imagination. I would pretend that St. Nicholas was coming to my house in Maryland, landing on our roof with his reindeers and sneaking in my living room to deliver the “goods.” I would wait up as long as I could to try to get a peek of him. I wanted to know him. I wanted to watch him make his delivery. I wanted to see if he was really “jolly.” I wanted to believe. I wanted to believe in something bigger and better than anything I'd ever known.

Caregivers make the world a better place

Last week one of my incredible, long-term employees came to me and said, "I know what you need to write about next week. You need to write about all of our amazing patients that are caregivers. They need to know they are not alone and that we can help them, make this time of their lives better." I smiled and we proceeded to talk about the art of caregiving and the caregivers themselves.
