Othello soccer wins again

GRANDVIEW - Something had to give in the match between the Huskies and Greyhounds when the two undefeated teams in CWAC league competition faced each other Saturday.
Othello, riding a 7-0 win streak, got all it could handle as they battled Grandview tooth and nail over 80 minutes of soccer. And, when the final whistled sounded, the Huskies had prevailed with a 1-0 victory to keep their record unblemished.
"Grandview was looking good on paper after some impressive wins over Wapato (9-2), Selah (4-3), and a 1-0 non-league loss to Toppenish," Huskies coach Bernie Garza said. "And they proved why they are a team to contend with as they came out firing in the first 15 minutes taking 10 shots to our two. Fortunately, our goalie Martel Saucedo, came up big for us."
Saucedo made several diving saves to keep the game scoreless until Jorge Campos dribbled around three defenders and faked a pass to a wide open forward, then drilled a shot from 20 yards out at the 18 minute-mark for the only goal of the match.
Up 1-0 at intermission, Garza knew the game was far from over.
"At halftime we talked about playing smart, not making any mistakes, and keeping the lead on the road," Garza said. "And we did just that. We had several shots go wide in the second half, and one that went in, but offsides was called and the goal was nullified.
It looked as though Grandview would have a chance to tie the match late as Othello was whistled for a violation and the referee was set to award the Greyhounds a penalty kick.
But after the officiating crew huddled together to discuss the play, the penalty was waved off.
"We had a scary movement when they called the penalty kick," Garza said."But we got a big break when the refs got together and discussed it and called it a foul against Grandview and not us."
That was the only real exciting moment in the second half of action Garza said as neither team did much in the way of attacking the other.
"We just held the lead," he said. "And they couldn't get any serious shots at our goal."
The win over Grandview gives Othello its best start in the 18 years Garza has been at the helm of the Huskies program.
"Martel has been awesome as he keeps making our team look good. He's had six shutouts already this season and has only allowed two goals," Garza said. "But a lot of credit has to go to the defense as a whole as well."
The Huskies midfielders are having a standout season too Garza said.
"Seniors, Ociel Romero, Enrique Romero and Jessie Villareal are doing great," he said. "Along with Jorge Campos, who is having a great season so far with 11 goals and multiple assists. He is proving why he was chosen CWAC offensive player of the year in 2011, and first team all state as a midfielder. Usually the forwards do all the scoring, but Jorge does it all. He scores and provides the assists when needed."
The win over the Greyhounds improves the Huskies to 3-0 in league play and 8-0 overall.
Othello put it's undefeated record on the line against win less Wapato Monday, but the results of the match were unavailable at press time.
The Huskies biggest challenge of the year comes Saturday when they host last years co-league champions East Valley Red Devils at noon.
