POST FALLS - Here's an event that would likely do President Thomas Jefferson proud.

And it will help the Post Falls Food Bank and those the nonprofit serves for sure.

The Post Falls Parks and Recreation Department has organized the first Pursuit of Happiness Day on Friday in the parking lot of Trading Co. Store from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The event will recognize the birthday of Jefferson, among those who drafted the Declaration of Independence, and be a community food drive for the food bank.

"Last fall our (similar) event raised around eight tons of food for the food bank on a short notice event," said Robert Bravato, Post Falls' recreation coordinator. "This time around we are looking to raise at least 13 tons."

Several free activities are planned during the event, including The Dan Powers Band performing from 3:30-5 p.m. and Kelly Hughes from 5-6 p.m.

There will also be a bounce house, giant tricycle races and trucks and emergency vehicles on display.

The public is invited.

Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, tax-deductible money donations for the food bank or food "grab bags" can be purchased inside the store.

The most-needed items are peanut butter, tuna, boxed dinners, macaroni and cheese, ravioli, soups, cereal and milk.

"Our pantry is in desperate need of items on the shelves," said Sherry Wallis, food bank director. "This is the time of year when the holiday season of giving is behind us, and the season of harvest lies months ahead of us."

The event is tied into the Feinstein Foundation's Million Dollar Challenge, which will match food bank donations during March and April. The foundation divides $1 million to participating agencies across the country based on their donations.

Post Falls schools will hold a food drive challenge in May.
