Music scholarships

The Flathead Valleyaires is taking applications for a limited number of college scholarships for graduating seniors from public and private schools who will major in music or related speech subjects. Applications are available with music teachers or counselors at schools. Deadline is April 16. For more information, call 758-7000.

Medical scholarship

Caitlin Newton, of Columbia Falls, a junior majoring in biology, was one of five Carroll College medical-school hopefuls from Montana to receive an Elsie P. Corette Memorial Scholarship. Newton received $10,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year. To date, more than 200 Corette scholarships totaling about $900,000 have been granted to more than 100 Carroll College students. About 70 percent of those students went on to become medical doctors. A total of $50,000 in Corette Scholarships were awarded for the 2012-2013 academic year, averaging $10,000 per student.

Citizens award

Columbia Falls High School student Jinise Osborne is the 2011-2012 winner of the Good Citizens Award for the Flathead Valley presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Bird Woman Falls Chapter. Osborne was honored and awarded a $100 scholarship based on her essay, grades, letters of recommendation and school and extracurricular activities, community service and goals.

Military news

Air Force Master Sgt. Dwight Beck was named in a recent ceremony one of the best in the Air Force Recruiting Command. Known as Operation Blue Suit, the Air Force Recruiting Service program recognizes the best recruiters worldwide for their efforts in recruiting a diverse, high-performing volunteer force to fill career fields critical to the Air Force in accomplishing its missions. Beck is the group operations flight chief assigned to the Air Force Recruiting Command at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. He has served in the military for 18 years. Beck graduated from Columbia Falls High School in 1993.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
