MOSES LAKE - Six Moses Lake teens compete for the Distinguished Young Woman title during an April 21 event, starting at 7 p.m., at Moses Lake High School.
This year's event is unlike that of past years' competition because "the girls are different, that makes for a different atmosphere," said event chairwoman Bonnie Dorris.
The theme is 'Masquerade,' so the routines and music reflect that. "The routines are just fabulous," said Dorris.
The contestants are Zhané Serrano, Ali Banda, Camiel Bruneel, Sarah Law, Tristin Ebel, and Maddi Cloyd. The teens are all Moses Lake residents and high school juniors.
The young women entered the competition for different reasons.
Banda entered because "I wanted to try something new and challenging (that was) outside of my comfort zone."
They vie for scholarships by using self-expression, and their personal talents.
The scholarships are given by various merchants and individuals in Moses Lake.
The scholarships will help the girls accomplish their educational goals.
Serrano is planning on a career in the medical field.
"Distinguished Young Woman teaches girls of all personalities, with all sorts of different activities and interests how to be a confident and poised woman," said Cloyd.
There is a variety of talent with all the different young women.
An example of their diversity is shown in their hobbies.
Bruneel enjoys teaching dance while Ebel enjoys quilting. The young women have been training for two months to prepare for the competition.
"It doesn't feel like a competition for us because we are all cheering each other on," said Law.
This is typically a sold-out event.
Dorris recommends people buy their tickets early, although they are available at the door. Tickets are available to the public for $15 at UPS, on 601 South Pioneer Way in Moses Lake, or call 509-766-1410.
High school students can purchase them from any contestant at the Moses Lake High School or at the Moses Lake Christian Academy.
For more information, call Jeni Chandler at 509-771-9162 or Bonnie Dorris at 509-750-1781.
