Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 5 months AGO
Janice P. Currie, passed away Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012. Born Feb. 2, 1935, in Clinton, Iowa, Janice moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1946 when her father, Gerald Kirk, was stationed at Farragut Naval Training Station.
Janice graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1953 and married Ralph Currie in 1954. They were married for 51 years before Ralph passed away in August 2005.
She worked as a floral designer for Evergreen Floral in downtown Coeur d’Alene beginning at the age of 14 and it was there that she began her love affair with flowers and gardening. Later, Janice began her second career with Kootenai County District Court in 1976 and retired in 1996 as the Supervisor of the Civil Department.
Since 1946, Janice was a very active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church serving on the Vestry, the Altar Guild, the Flower Guild and various other committees, as well as one of her favorites, “Staple Fold” where she and her friends prepared the monthly newsletter. Many prayer shawls were knitted by Janice, blessed and given to those in need during another of her favorite activities at church, “Knit One, Prayer Two.”
Janice and Ralph loved traveling to Seattle to see the Yankees play the Mariners, visit family and shop at Pike Place Market. Janice volunteered for the Kootenai Medical Center Auxiliary and served as president. In recent years, she volunteered for the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre and the Museum of North Idaho. She enjoyed nothing more than being with friends and family.
In 2008, Janice was diagnosed with cancer and had just completed her fourth round of chemotherapy in March 2012. Janice’s strength, sense of humor and all out feistiness kept her and her friends and family going throughout her cancer journey.
Janice is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, June and Ken McCloskey, Janell and Mark Colopy, and Cassie and George Kelley; granddaughter Angie Duncan and her husband Michael Eng; granddaughter Nicki Duncan; grandson Connor Kelley; great-grandson Colby Duncan; brother DeWayne and Maynora Kirk; sister Claudia and Steve Moors; and numerous nieces and nephews.
