Letter: Recall sets 'dangerous precedent'

The Board of the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association unanimously declares its support for Mayor Sandi Bloem, and Council Members Woody McEvers, Deanna Goodlander, and Mike Kennedy. These four individuals have worked tirelessly on a number of great projects for the citizens of Coeur d’Alene including the Kroc Center, Centennial Trail, Coeur d’Alene Library and Midtown revitalization.

Whether you support the McEuen Redesign or not is irrelevant. There is an attack being waged against our Representative Democracy by those that would have the citizens of Coeur d’Alene sign a petition to remove the Mayor and half the City Council simply because they don’t share the same opinion.

This is a dangerous precedent. Initiating a recall against these hard working and duly elected representatives, because one disagrees with their decisions, is unfair and unwise. We believe it would have a negative impact on the local economy and the community at large.

As a Board, we ask that when confronted by these individuals to sign a recall petition, you respectfully tell them “No”. Then remind them disagreeing with one’s opinion should be resolved at the polls through the normal election process, not through a recall action.

Sincerely,

The Board of the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association
